Exciting news!

I belong to a photography group called VIEWFINDERS. We have been working on a project called Living Abstracts for the past year. Our mission was to take photographs of living objects and turn them into abstract works of art.

I'm thrilled to announce that our work will be shown in Galleria Tempest, located in downtown Sacramento. Our show will run through the end of October. A reception will be held this Saturday, October 11, 2008 from 6-9pm. I invite everyone to come down and enjoy the arts on Second Saturday and stop in to see my work! This is my first gallery showing and I'm so excited!

Here is an excerpt from the show:

At first glance you may see only color or movement or lighting. A closer look will reveal unusual views of plants, animals, water, wind, sunlight and other elements of life. Taken at locations throughout the greater Sacramento region, these photos have not been digitally manipulated; they represent the photographers’ view through the lens.

Our best friends, Jackie & Steve, just welcomed their first child into their family. I was invited to help Jackie with labor and delivery. I am so honored to have been present at Aubrey's birth. Jackie had a long and difficult labor, poor thing. But she was so strong and I'm so very proud of her.

I recently got to photograph the new little princess, too! Here is her video!

Sweet as Sugar

I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful little girl recently. Eva is not only the prettiest little thing ever, her personality is just as sweet. We had a lot of fun talking about SpongeBob and all the colors of the fish that swim in the water. She's very bright. :)

Eva's Grandma was my daughter's second grade teacher. Hannah still talks about her today. I appreciate the lasting positive influence that she has had on Hannah. Thanks so much Mrs. L!!

I met with my good friend, and fellow photographer, Carmen Salazar in the studio today. We wanted to practice some lighting techniques and we used the girls as models. We pushed them pretty hard, and they were such troopers. I got some great shots of them. And since I haven't taken any photos of them since their hair cuts, this was a bonus for me! I recently had a session with a wonderful new family. We were scheduled to have a shoot in June, but it was rescheduled for July. And it's a good thing that we did move our session! In mid July, Melanie and Brad got the most delicious news. There was a beautiful baby girl ready for adoption! Baby Jena was added to their family and we got to do the session with this adorable little girl in tow! Congratulations Melanie and Brad! And here is your sneak peek!

Zach - Class of '09

We had a wonderful session with my Senior Rep from Cordova High School last week. We got some killer images as Zach was game for anything! We found a great garage and went inside and found a great old ramp, discarded old junk, and wonderful textured walls. Thank you Zach for being such a great model!

11:45 PM...

This may not be late to most of you...but it is for me. I'm old (to my kids anyway), my kids are young, my life starts at 6:30am. So 11:45pm and I can't sleep (it could be due to the Hershey bar I ate at 10:00pm...I'll have to think some more on that). The girls crashed a long time ago (they are out of school and allowed to stay up late...they didn't make it). I am entertaining myself by building my new Mixwit tape. Take a listen while you read, if you like. (My favorite mix is my 80's tape though!)

So you've all seen my hair cut short (I chopped off nearly ten inches!). And if you haven't, just scroll down and read the previous post. Well, I finally had it colored again. And as I'm sitting here, bored, I decided to take some pics for you.

Ok, we've all seen these great pics that the teens take of themselves by just holding out their cameras and snapping away, right? (usually in the bathroom mirror, too) Well, since it's just me up tonight, I figured I'd give it a go. Well, someone should have told me that you have to read the "Bathroom Mirror Self Portraits For Dummies" book before attempting this! It's crazy hard! Props to the kids that do it everyday and look fabulous! You have a talent!

The end of an Era

Today marked the end of "babyhood" and the beginning of "something a little more grown up". My oldest, Hannah, has been begging me for four months to cut her hair. I didn't want to give in because, well, her long hair was gorgeous and oh so pretty. But I finally decided that I didn't want her to ever be afraid of change and booked her an appointment. (with my rather fantastic hair dresser, Trixie Ewing, with Rumors Salon and Spa - call her if you want an amazing cut and color!)

As soon as I walk in with the girls, Hannah hops in the chair and is ready to go. Sarah, my little one, didn't want her hair touched at all! Trixie puts Hannah's hair in a low pony tail and off goes all the years of beautiful hair. Hannah was tickled pink, I felt a little sick to my stomach. Then it was back to the shampoo bowl and Sarah turns to me and says, "Mommy, I want my hair cut like Hannah's" and she holds her fingers up to her hair to indicate how high she wants to chop it off. I sat her down and reminded her that hair takes a long time to grow back, we can't just glue it back on. She says, "I know Mommy. I'm getting my hair cut today!". Well ok...

Hannah gets an a-line 'do and looks absolutely amazing. Everything about the hair style is just so "Hannah". I'm thrilled, she's thrilled, and Sarah's been given all the courage she needs to move forward. Sarah hops in the chair, the pony tail goes in, and off comes her hair! And guess what? She looks fantastic as well!! I'm just so glad that I kept my own shortcomings to myself and allowed the girls total freedom. They are so proud. Sarah even told me, "Mom, I feel like a new woman!" (she's 5...)

Ok, ok....I couldn't resist the urgings of Trixie...I chopped off my hair, too!! (I go in for some fun colors next week!)

I had the pleasure today of working with one of my best friends. She and her adoring husband are expecting their first baby in August. And...it's a girl! My girls are so excited and can't wait to teach the new baby about The Jonas Brothers and High School Musical. While I just can't wait to hold her and get some baby snuggle time.

Hannah's Concert

Nuttall's Sneak Peek

I had the most amazing session yesterday with The Nuttall's. We originally scheduled our session for 9am, however due to the rain...yes, rain!, we moved our session back a few hours.

I arrived at William Land Park and listened to the new New Kids On The Block song (did you know they got back together?? I feel like I'm 14 again!) while I waited for them to arrive. I got the call that the family was there and I waited by the car for them. I saw them walking up and my first thought was, "Wow! This is a great looking family. And they are so well dressed!". Take a look at the family photo, and you'll agree that they look great together!

I had such a good time with The Nuttall's. The kids are all great and were such troupers. They were up for anything! We laughed throughout the session and I hope they had as much fun as I did.

Meetup Group Gone Mad!

So I met these great people through a meetup group and we decided to go do our own thing last night. We met in Old Town Elk Grove and played around with off camera flash as we watched the sunset. We used each other as our models and just had a blast.

A concert & a road trip

Hannah(8) started playing the clarinet 6 months ago. She is completely dedicated to her music and enjoys it immensely. She's so faithful, that she wakes up super early twice a week to practice for an hour BEFORE school!

This past weekend, Hannah's band had a performance at the Western Festival in Elk Grove. They played under the warm sun as the breeze gently blew through the trees. It was a fabulous day. The beginning band did an amazing job! I was so proud of Hannah, my eyes welled up with tears as she played. It was a great moment.

Then, right after the concert, we headed off to Benicia. We lived there while the girls were really tiny and made some lifelong friends, The Birmingham's. Their daughter's sleepover birthday party was taking place that night! So my Dad decided to tag along with the plan of doing a little photo excursion down by the bay. Hannah rejoiced in seeing her friend, and my dad and I left for the pier. I have to admit, I miss this town. It's so quaint and peaceful. And the smell of the air is so energizing. We couldn't pull ourselves away and wound up spending the next 5 hours there!

Yesterday was a great day. I took the girls and we met up with my girlfriends for an afternoon of shopping and eating. As we (my girls and I) were leaving, we passed by Claire's. Claire's is a jewelry store that does ear piercing. Sarah, my almost 6 year old, asked about getting her ears pierced. I have always told the girls that they could choose when and if they wanted to get their ears pierced. Hannah chose to do it when she was 7. And yesterday was Sarah's day. So we went in and started to pick out which earrings she wanted to get. It took all of 5 seconds. She spotted the diamond ones and that was it. She's in love with diamonds...I feel sorry for her husband...

Today, Sarah, my darling princess with diamonds in her ears, woke up on the wrong side of the bed. And of course, me being a photographer, I had to get a couple quick shots of her and her new "ears". Well, I'm not sure if you've heard of this syndrome, but both of my girls suffer from it. It's called, Photographer's Child Syndrome and it's highly contagious. Once one child gets it, so does the other. It really is my fault, I admit. I shove the camera in their face on a daily basis.

So today, I gladly share Sarah's new earrings as she suffers from Photographer's Child Syndrome...

Fox 40 News!

From the mountain top...

I was contacted by Natalie Bomke of Fox 40 News a couple months ago about doing a piece for her segment, Sacramento Scene. She had seen the premier issue of California Weds magazine (the one where I got the cover and feature article!) and was intrigued by the hottest trend in wedding photography, trash the dress.

Well, this Saturday, we shot our segment! I wrangled up one of my favorite wedding couples, Christina and Tony; my wonderful new assistant, Athena; and my Dad, Al Jacobus of The Focused Lens.

Here's the whole story:

James (that would be my hubby) took the girls on their first fishing trip on Saturday. So that meant that I was home alone all morning. Since we weren't shooting until 2:00pm, I had a lot of time to "think". Not being able to be alone with my thoughts for one more second, I gathered my equipment and headed to my parents house. I needed to get my mind off my nerves and well, I wanted my Mom to make me lunch...

After my comforting lunch of Boca burger with fried onions and salad, my Mom and I rehearsed my lines and then had a nice little game of cards. We played Canasta, and I won. (thanks for letting me win, Mom!)

Ok, time to get ready and walk out the door. My Dad and I drove over to Christina and Tony's house, where we met up with Athena. Christina looked so beautiful! Everyone loaded into the van and away to the American River we went!

We had a little time to kill when we arrived, so we got our equipment ready and practiced my lines once again. Can you tell I was REALLY nervous about the interview section?

Natalie Bomke and her photographer, Dan, arrived and there were introductions all around. They were so kind and put us all at ease right away. We scouted out a good spot to do the interviews and as Dan got set up, Natalie reassured me that this was going to be easy. She starts asking the questions and I turn into a ... well, I'm not really sure, but I think my voice went up an octave and I made some seriously funny faces! My "lines" went out the window. Besides all that, I really wasn't that nervous and Natalie was right, it was kinda easy. Christina and Tony, on the other hand, were fantastic.

I was so relieved once the interview was over, the rest of the shoot was a piece of cake! We were all relaxed and just out to have a good time on our shoot. We got some great shots on dry land and then moved down to the water. Although it was a chilly and very breezy day, the water was actually warm. And Christina, being the star she is, even went all the way in (you'll see in the video!).

Once we finished up the water shots, a great feeling came over me. WE DID IT! All the nerves leading up to this day, all the preparation, all the coordination...all of it, every last ounce, was worth it.

Dan:
I know we weren't supposed to look at you during our shoot, but I could tell you were going above and beyond to make us all look great. You swooped in and out of shoots and were so fluid. It was so much fun to watch...even if it was only out of the corner of my eye!

Natalie:
You went out of your way to keep in close contact with me and answer any questions that I had. You helped put me at ease and were so kind and thoughtful. Thank you so much for taking the time to work with me.

Today I had the pleasure of seeing these two darlings again! They come to see me every year and I enjoy watching them get more beautiful each time. Today was a chilly day and the wind was kicking up a bit, so the girls were done long before I was ready to say goodbye. But that's ok, we got some great shots! The Wheels Are Turning...

Last Saturday we had a day of spackle and sandpaper!
I met Carmen at the studio and we got to work on the walls. We finished up the spackling and got a lot of sanding done.

Carmen's little sister, Bella, was there to help as well. We put her to work and she didn't complain once! Bella was also given the job of taking pictures for the blog. Don't you think she did a fantastic job? She's a natural! Bella, I enjoyed spending the day together and talking about Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers!

Carmen's good friend Melissa stopped by and helped sand and clean up our mess (sorry I didn't get a picture of you Melissa!).

Once we broke for lunch, we were greeted by Brian, Carmen's beau. He's a goof and a ton of fun and I can't wait to get to know him more!

Crystal, Carmen's assistant, showed up just as I was leaving. I'm looking forward to getting to know you as well, Crystal!

Midtown Studio

Exciting news! I just signed the contract on a co-op studio in Midtown Sacramento! Carmen Salazar, a friend and wonderful photographer, is one of the leaders of the co-op. She is amazing and I'm looking forward to sharing this space with her and the other photographers who come onboard!

The studio is a 3200 sq ft, industrial-like loft, in an old historic building in midtown. There are three different camera areas. One is an old brick wall, one is weathered wood, and another is for seamless paper (different color backgrounds). There is a private dressing room and a client area, too! There are windows everywhere you look and the feeling in this space is just amazing!

We are in the process of getting all walls and ceiling complete right now. This weekend we'll be spackling and sanding the walls to get them ready for a fresh coat of paint.

We're not open yet, but if you would like to book a studio session this summer, let me know asap! I have a feeling the time slots will be going fast! I'll also be having an Open House sometime in the next few months. I'll keep you updated on when!

Photography Conference

This past weekend, my hubby (James) and I attended a photography conference held in Napa, CA. We meet so many great photogs! Thank you to so many who made us feel so welcomed!

We had shoots with fan-tab-u-lous models during the day and in the evenings we learned from stellar presenters. I can't even process it all right now! I've got stacks of notes and millions of ideas. This year is going to be a blast for Jennifer Moon Photography! I can't wait to bring you along for the ride!

I am still proofing all the photos I took, but here is one couple that I just had to get to first! This is Nikki. She was our hair and makeup artist for the shoots and rockin' impromptu model! Her adoring hubby, Erik even jumped in for some steamy shots!

Sneak Peek: Owen

I did a couple's session with Dan & Megan last year. We headed downtown for some fun and artsy photos. This month, they welcomed their first bundle of joy into their home. Let me introduce: Owen. He was so good during our session. We could mold him and pose him, and he didn't mind! He especially loved being cuddled by his Mom though!

This is Savannah. She is a long hair tabby with a "princess" attitude. I adopted her 13 years ago this year. She's sweet as pie to men (especially if they are little old men!) and completely ignores the rest of the world's population. She doesn't like to be held, she plays only with my hair ties (I'm so tired of digging these out of her food bowl!), and she has an issue with crystals in her bladder, so we have to buy her expensive "specialty" cat food from the vet. Why do we keep her around? Because every night she cuddles up at my feet and keeps me warm.

This is Gunner. He just turned four in December of 2007. He's a black lab with a drooly tongue. Unlike his counterpart, Gunner could care less who's petting him...as long as someone is! He thinks he's a chihuahua and tries to sit in your lap all the time. He was originally adopted to be my husband's hunting dog. We soon learned that Gunner doesn't like to get wet, he hates the cold, and he's afraid of the dark. So why do we keep him around? He loves to cuddle up at our feet while we watch tv and he keeps us warm.

Our two furry foot-warmers warm more than our feet, they warm our hearts. Our family just wouldn't be the same without them!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting a miracle. That's right, a true born miracle. Miss D was born just under two pounds when her parents welcomed her into the world. Being so premature, she had to spend many of her first months in the hospital. Her very proud Daddy showed me picture after picture of her early days. All those tubes and wires and her little tiny body...

But this girl is a fighter. Here she is today, seven months later; happy, thriving, completely healthy, beautiful. A miracle.

I'm so happy to share this thrilling news with you! You want the details? You got it!

I received a phone call from the editor of the Sacramento Bee inquiring about my work. He told me that The Bee was getting ready to launch a new wedding magazine called California Weds. He received my business card from a colleague and was very interested in the trash the dress photos on my site. (Check them out if you haven't yet! Soooo fun!) He was so intrigued that he wanted to do a feature article on trash the dress. I was thrilled with getting an article; but then he went on to talk about wanting to use my work as the cover! I about fell out of my chair!

He wanted to meet with me and so we set up a time. As you can imagine, I was a nervous wreck as I walked into The Bee's headquarters. But I was soon put at ease as we walked to his office and we started flipping through my portfolio. They loved one girl in particular and had to have her. (Her name is Jessica and she's a dream...more about Jess later.) The problem though...Jessica was in her mother's wedding dress and it was very dated. They wanted something new and fresh. I told them I'd get them what they wanted. I called up Jessica, told her she was going to be a cover girl and took her to a bridal shop the next day!

We met a couple days later to shoot by the American River. Turns out, the weather that September day wanted to do nothing but spit water down upon us. We shot as quickly as we could while the sun was out. All the while, I kept a close eye on the impending storm. The sky grew darker and as Jessica was chest deep in the river, the heavens opened up. I grabbed Jessica. (Have you ever tried to pull a wet bride out of the river? It's not easy!) I threw my camera under my shirt and we headed to shore and an awaiting blanket. I signaled to my assistant to wrap it all up and we "ran" to the car. I say "ran" because my assistant and I were loaded down with equipment and poor Jessica was weighed down by a soggy wedding gown! We laughed all the way to the car, got dried off and changed and I thought to myself, "God, I love my job!".

*Jessica, isn't she beautiful? She was amazing and never complained, not once. I threw her in muck and grime and very cold water. She did it all and preformed flawlessly. This girl should model professionally! Thank you Jessica for being a part of this with me. You are wonderful and I can't wait to work with you again!

So, I got the cover, I got a three page feature article, and I fulfilled one of my dreams. Life is good.

Stunning Wedding

As most of you know, I have started shooting weddings this year. It has been such an amazing experience and each wedding brings such amazing rewards. I feel as though I become more than just the couple's photographer, I become their friend.

On October 6, 2007, I had the honor of photographing Jorge and Elizabeth's wedding.
This couple lit up whatever room they entered. Their eyes rarely left each others. They floated on air. Their wedding was spectacular. Held at St. Mary's Church, even the gorgeous surroundings didn't hold a candle to the bride's beauty as she walked down the aisle.

Thank you, Jorge and Elizabeth for allowing me to witness your union, be part of the emotion of the day, and help you hold onto these memories forever.

Welcome to the new blog of Jennifer Moon Photography!
I'm excited to start blogging again. There's so much new stuff happening, I'm not sure where to start! The most exciting news:

1. I am now shooting weddings. They are so much fun and I cannot wait to dive head first into the excitement pool that is a wedding! If you know anyone who is looking for a wedding photographer, please send them my way!

2. Trash the Dress. Have you heard about this? It's the latest craze. A bride (after her wedding, of course) and sometimes her groom go out with me to exotic locations and we play and have fun. All the while, we're getting amazingly unique photographs. I'll have to post some photos for you. They are unbelievable.

3. Calling all 2008 Seniors! It's time for Senior Portraits! If you want portraits that will wow and maybe even make your friends jealous, call me! Seniors get an extended session, collections to choose from, and so many other great perks. Hurry, space is filling up!

4. Families, there is something very special coming up for you! The first annual Day in the Park with Jennifer Moon Photography. This is a special mini-session day just for previous clients as a thank you for your being such awesome clients! More details to come, so watch the blog closely. This will be first come, first serve.
